OBLU SELECT Sangeli’s coral restoration project has successfully transplanted over 10,000 coral fragments using coral nursery and frame techniques. Despite bleaching events that affected much of the Maldives, Sangeli’s reefs showed remarkable resilience, testament to ongoing restoration efforts and the effectiveness of the resort’s marine protection measures. Adding a creative twist to marine conservation, the resort’s ghost net upcycling initiative transforms discarded fishing nets into beautiful handmade bracelets, sold to guests. The proceeds directly support coral restoration, merging environmental action with community-driven craftsmanship.

As part of the Sangeli Muraka Project, a state-of-the-art underwater camera now live-streams footage from one of the coral gardens directly to guest villas. This immersive experience allows travellers to witness the dynamic reef ecosystem in real-time—perfect for those who may not snorkel or dive. The footage is also featured during marine biology sessions and at the Muraka Marine Centre, inspiring greater appreciation and engagement with ocean conservation.

The resort’s onsite biogas plant plays a key role in reducing food waste. It processes up to 1,000 kg of kitchen waste daily to generate methane gas, which powers about 40% of the kitchens’ gas requirements. The byproduct compost is used to fertilise landscaped areas, creating a full-circle sustainability loop.

The cult-favourite Martín Codax wine gala is back for a second sun-soaked run at COLOURS OF OBLU resorts and it is set to be even more delicious than before. The celebrations begin at OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO on 31 August and 1 September, followed by OBLU SELECT Sangeli on 3 and 4 September. We caught up with Nicolas Laguette, Director of Wines at Atmosphere Core, to get the inside scoop.

Q: Nicolas, tell us what makes the Martín Códax Wine Gala at COLOURS OF OBLU so special?

A: As travel becomes more experience-led, our guests are seeking moments that feel meaningful and one-of-a-kind and that’s exactly what our wine galas deliver. The OBLU Wine Galas are a total vibe. Think music, sun-kissed evenings, wine stories from Galicia, and an energy that’s just electric. Last year was such a hit, we just had to bring it back. These aren’t formal wine tastings; they’re vibrant, joy-filled evenings where laughter is as important as the pairings. It’s Spain’s soulful way of wining and dining – reimagined in paradise.

Q: What’s new for this year?

A: This time, we’re thrilled to be pouring the Martín Códax Organistrum Albariño, a premium white that’s taken home a host of awards in 2024. Crafted entirely from Albariño grapes, Organistrum is named after an ancient medieval string instrument known for its harmonious tones. The wine reflects that same balance – expressive, elegant, and absolutely divine with seafood. And Paula Lobato, the radiant ambassador of Bodegas Martín Códax, travels to our resorts to host the series. Her enthusiasm and knowledge will bring the entire experience to life – from grape to glass.

Q: How are the wine gala evenings set up?

A: Each island resort offers its own unique twist. At Helengeli, we’re mixing things up with a progressive Indian feast at Raga Route one night, followed by a barefoot beachside dinner at Just Grill the next, both perfectly paired with Martín Códax’s finest vintages. At Sangeli, guests are invited to a golden-hour soirée on the stunning One Banyan Island, followed by a curated multi-course wine-paired dinner at our JustWok and Just Grill restaurants. The final leg of the tour lands at the adults-only Lobigili, also known as the island of love. The four-star superior resort, a part of the COLOURS OF OBLU brand by Atmosphere Core, closed in early May 2023 for a comprehensive renovation.

The Iftar was held on the 3 and 10 April in the Only BLU Under Ocean Restaurant at OBLU SELECT Lobigili and OBLU Xperience Ailafushi.

After a convenient 15-minute speedboat ride to Ailafushi Island, partners were welcomed and escorted for a quick island tour. After the island tour, they descended 6.8 meters below sea level for Iftar at Only BLU restaurant.

A specially curated menu showcased delectable local and international dishes, all presented with impeccable fine-dining service. The delicious cuisine, soothing views of marine life, and a sense of togetherness created lasting memories for all those in attendance.

OBLU Xperience Ailafushi and OBLU SELECT Lobigili organized a memorable under ocean marine tour on 23 February 2023 for 14 students from Jamaluddin School. The students along with four teachers arrived at Ailafushi island at 15:30. After a warm welcome by the resort management, they were escorted to Only BLU Under Ocean Restaurant where they refreshed themselves with a cold face towel and a delicious beverage.

In-house Marine Biologist, Giorgia Maggioni conducted the Marine Tour. She started with a presentation about the different types of fish and coral found in the Maldives. After the presentation, students spotted fish through the windows of the restaurant and marked them in their Educational Marine Booklet. This booklet is a specially crafted workbook created for the Educational Marine Tour.

After the fascinating tour, students played and enjoyed snacks and drinks at KIDSX CAMP – the kids club at OBLU Xperience Ailafushi before departure from the resort.

The Educational Marine Tour sensitises school children between the ages of 5 to 12 years about marine life. They identify fish and corals, connecting with the country’s fragile ecosystem. This initiative attempts to educate future generations who may decide to have a career in hospitality. Every month the resort will invite students from different schools in Malé for the program.

From the fundraising MVR 50,000 was utilized to procure essential linen for the institute, including pillows, pillow covers, bedsheets, and waterproof mattress protectors. On 25 February 2023, Ram Bhoyroo, the GM of OBLU Xperience Ailafushi and OBLU SELECT Lobigili, along with the Resort Management and Welfare Committee visited K. Guraidhoo. They were given a tour of the institute and afterwards had a special ceremony to hand over the items collected.

COLOURS OF OBLU brand brings yet another fresh, innovative concept to the Maldives with the launch of JustWok at OBLU SELECT Sangeli. The Contemporary Pan Asian restaurant, included in the resort’s Serenity PlanTM, opened on 4 June 2022.

JustWok serves bountiful shared platters and playful culinary creations for a convivial, family-style dining experience. Large dishes of food replace the individual portions. The concept is that of families feeling at home with the serving and handpicking of the delicious food platters and connecting over shared laughs and chatter.

Located in One Banyan mini-island, JustWok replaces the resort’s Simply Veg outlet. Crystalline ocean views and swaying palm trees frame the indoor-outdoor restaurant. From delicate cherry blossom patterns on the cutlery to accents of orange and aqua blue hues, there is a pleasing Oriental vibe in the design.

A carefully curated à la carte menu features family-style platters full of exotic flavours. Aromatic soups, fragrant kimchi, and the daily chef’s special all showcase fresh produce and authentic spices. The steamed section has much-loved Asian favourites, including handmade dim sums filled with himeji, shitake, and cream, edamame bean dumplings, and classic har gaw with beans and prawns.

In the main course, guests can tuck into blissful wok-tossed delicacies. Kung pao chicken, mapo tofu, reef fish fillet, and Australian Angus tenderloin served with sides of steamed jasmine rice and braised noodles make for hearty meals.

Tell us a little about yourself. How was it growing up in the Maldives?

I belong to a small island called K. Huraa near the capital, Malé. It was amazing to grow up on an island amidst nature. The sea, a life-giving force, was a big part of my childhood.

What has been your career journey so far, and when did you join the AH&R family?

I gained inspiration from my dad who has worked in the hospitality industry, running his own guesthouse and restaurant since 2005. Watching him sparked a desire in me to work in a similar field. I moved to Sri Lanka to pursue my studies in 2007 and eventually, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management from the Management & Science University in Colombo in 2020.

Equipped with a degree and 6 months of experience working with dad, I landed a job as a receptionist followed by a job as a Guest Relations Officer, both at leading Maldivian resorts. I learned a lot and gained experience.

With the aim of career growth, I looked for further professional challenges, and that led me to OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and OBLU SELECT Lobigili, which I joined in January 2022. Pre-opening was something I really wanted to be a part of as I believed that it would give me more exposure and chances to grow and learn.

What does it mean to you to be an Island Hostess?

It gives me great pride to be an Island Hostess on an island where 80% of the employees are women. It makes me feel that women are capable of achieving anything that they put their minds to. It’s all about interest and passion! I work with a diverse team with unity and great leadership.

Is the concept of ‘Island Hostess’ or ‘Island Chief’ connected to Maldivian culture, if yes, how?

Yes, it reflects true Maldivian culture, as every island has a Chief who leads the islanders who, in turn, look after the island and care for its resources. Similarly, we have the same concept at our resorts.

What’s your typical workday like?

I thoroughly enjoy working. As a people person, I believe in this motto: “The job is not your work, what you do with your heart and soul is the work.”

What’s something new and exciting about OSL?

The concept of two Island Hostesses taking care of the guests throughout their stay which I find totally unique.
